Denmark summons Russian ambassador after Russian aircraft violated its airspace

Copenhagen has denounced the violation of Danish airspace by a Russian reconnaissance aircraft and summoned the Russian ambassador for the incident, Danish Foreign Minister Gepe Kofod announced today.

“The Russian ambassador is summoned to the Foreign Ministry tomorrow. Another Russian violation of Danish airspace. This is completely unacceptable and particularly worrying in the current situation,” Kofont wrote on Twitter.

The incident occurred on Friday night when a Russian reconnaissance plane flew over Danish airspace east of Bornholm (Danish island in the Baltic) before entering Swedish airspace. The Swedish Ministry of Defense announced yesterday that a Russian AN-30 helicopter violated the Swedish airspace on Friday night.

“This is a reconnaissance aircraft that flew into our airspace for a very short time. Two Danish F-16s intervened immediately,” a spokesman for the Danish Ministry of Defense, Henry Mortensen, told AFP.

The Russian aircraft then left Danish airspace.

“Such incidents are ‘rare,'” Mortensen added.

Unlike Sweden, where the NATO membership debate is ongoing, Denmark is a member of the North Atlantic Alliance.
