Denmark: Those sentenced to life imprisonment will not be able to have sex for the first 10 years

In Denmark, those sentenced to Life imprisonment they will no longer be able to have new sexual relations during the first ten years of their sentence in order to avoid the phenomenon of “groupies” of criminals, as announced today by the Ministry of Justice.

“In recent years we have seen abhorrent examples of prisoners who have committed brutal crimes communicating with young people in order to attract their sympathy and attention. “Obviously this situation must end,” said Justice Minister Nick Hackerup in a statement.

A young woman recently revealed that she succumbed at the age of 17 to the charm of Peter Mansen, who has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2017 brutal murder of journalist Kim Val in his makeshift submarine.

“Those sentenced to life imprisonment should not be able to use our prisons as dating centers or information platforms to brag about their crimes,” he said.

Prisoners will be able to keep in touch by letters or by telephone with people close to them before their imprisonment.

The bill prohibits those serving life sentences from forming new relationships during the first 10 years of their sentence, contrary to what has been possible so far. At the same time, it aims to prevent them from posting free messages on social media about the crime or crimes they committed – or participated in – on podcasts on the subject. Today, convicts can set an example on Facebook.

The bill is expected to be adopted in the fall and the new legislation will enter into force on January 1, 2022.
