An inter -party bill was submitted by Members of the US Congress to extend the duration of the presidential exemption from the weapons embargo on the Republic of Cyprus from one to five years. The “End the Cyprus Embargo Act”, signed by Chris Pope, Gas Bilirakis, Dina Taitou and Nikol Malliotakis, aims to strengthen the US -Cyprus military cooperation and strengthen interoperability and strategic planning. According to ERT correspondent Lena Argyris, supporters of the bill stressed the role of Cyprus as a reliable partner in the Eastern Mediterranean and pointed out that the annual renewal of the exception makes it difficult for the supply of US defensive material. The bill prohibits the abolition of exemption without certification that Cyprus is working with the US to fight money laundering and does not provide port facilities to Russian warships.
