The Chilean government published a statement this Friday (10) in which it states that the inauguration of President Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela “is devoid of any democratic legitimacy”, in addition to condemning “the increase in repression and political persecution” in the Chavista country.
The Executive insisted, through a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that “the Venezuelan people have the right to decide their own destiny” and described the electoral process of July 28, 2024, in which the Venezuelan electoral body granted victory to Maduro, as “fraudulent”, “without “the lowest standards of transparency and integrity”.
As it has done on several occasions since the beginning of the Venezuelan crisis, the government of progressive Gabriel Boric “demanded full respect” for human rights and the “reestablishment” of the democratic order and fundamental freedoms.
The day before, Boric himself described Maduro’s “regime” as a “dictatorship”, after learning of the arrest of opposition leader María Corina Machado during a large rally in Caracas – she was released shortly afterwards.
“We do not recognize the electoral fraud perpetuated by the Maduro government, which to this day continues to persecute organizations linked to the defense of human rights and organizations linked to those who disagree with it”, added the Chilean president.
Boric, who maintained a very critical stance against the Chavista leader and from the beginning openly denounced electoral “fraud” in Venezuela, had already called the Venezuelan government a “dictatorship” in August last year, which opened an internal crisis in his country. country between the government coalition and the Communist Party.
Maduro ordered the departure of Chilean diplomats from Venezuela after Boric criticized the electoral process and did not recognize him as the winner in the July presidential elections, marked by a controversial vote count that several countries and political representatives accused of being fraudulent, including the candidate of the opposition Edmundo González Urrutia, who claims his victory.
