Deputies debate on STF decision that resumed Francischini’s impeachment

In a debate held by CNN this Wednesday (8), federal deputies Alê Silva (Republicans-MG) and Henrique Fontana (PT-RS) comment on the president’s statement Jair Bolsonaro (PL) on the decision of the Second Panel of the Federal Court of Justice (STF).

On Tuesday (7), the Supreme Court overturned the monocratic decision of minister Kássio Nunes Marques, which had overturned the determination of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) that revoked the mandate of Paraná state deputy Fernando Francischini (União Brasil).

After the end of the trial, the Chief Executive came out in defense of the parliamentarian’s attitude, who was punished after disseminating fake news about electronic voting machines in 2018. “There was fraud in the 2018 elections. 13 on the screen and complete the vote. There were dozens of videos, dozens of people calling me throughout the night. This is true,” Bolsonaro declared.

The allegation is unfounded, as has already been proven by the TSE itself.

For Alê Silva, the president’s speech is correct. “Mere opinions cannot be considered fake news. Francischini just exposed what many voters said that day. This we hear all over the country. Making facts public has now become fake news? What defense will we have?”, asks the deputy.

The parliamentarian of the Republicados reinforces that the Legislative Power is the voice of the people. “We are the voice of the people. Of course, we are going to expose the complaints that come to us,” she says.

Henrique Fontana, in turn, sees the president’s statement as an attempt to cast doubt on the electoral process. “As he cannot reverse the election, and his problem is a lack of votes, he is intensifying the attempt to spread this false news that the electoral system is at risk. He has been threatening this issue for four years and has never shown proof,” he points out.

In his view, the STF acted well “because freedom of expression and the parliamentary immunity that we have cannot be used to commit crimes”. “The crime committed by deputy Francischini was to incite public disorder and anarchy”, evaluates the PT.

In defending the state deputy, Fonseca believes that the president of Palácio do Planalto instigates his digital militia to spread new fake news.

“Can you imagine what Trump did in the EUAS is repeated in Brazil, and these militias incite violence on the day that Bolsonaro’s electoral defeat is announced? We will put lives at risk. It is not acceptable to continue convenient with these lies”, he points out.

The deputies still comment on Bolsonaro’s statement that “it is no longer time to comply with the decision of the STF”. “I went from the time when ‘the Supreme Court’s decision is not discussed, it is carried out’. I went from that time. IM not anymore. Certain measures catch the eye of laypeople. It’s unbelievable. They want to harm me and harm Brazil”.

Alê Silva agrees with Bolsonaro. According to her, the speech was not an attack, but a defense. “Political persecution is clear. The will of the Federal Supreme Court is really to persecute Bolsonaro and the Bolsonaristas”.

Fonseca sees the statement as “disastrous”. “This speech is disastrous because it throws Brazil into an even greater institutional crisis. If he does not comply with a decision, he is a dictator”, he justifies. In the deputy’s opinion, Brazil is already experiencing a dictatorship of the “Toga”.
