Deputies demand government for greater investment in public security in Amazonas

In Debate CNN This Tuesday (14), federal deputies Captain Alberto Neto (PL-AM) and José Ricardo (PT-AM) discussed the lack of investment in public security in the State of amazon . The disappearance of the indigenist Bruno Araújo Pereira and the English journalist Dom Phillips in the Vale do Javari region shed light on the issue.

In an interview with CNN , missionary from the Indigenous Missionary Council (CIMI) Chico Gunther stated that the biggest problem in the Amazon is organized crime. “One of the major problems in the region, especially in the border areas, is the organized crime . For the leaders themselves indigenous and those who support them don’t have much to fall back on in terms of security. The measures they usually take are to work together more closely so that they are not easy targets for this bandit that is advancing inside the indigenous lands”, said the missionary.

supporter of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Captain Alberto Neto agreed with Gunther’s statement. The PL deputy even praised the partnership between the federal government and the VIGIA program for the creation of the Arpão Base, which helped advance the fight against drug trafficking in the region, but agreed that it is not enough. “The area where the disappearance took place is a gigantic area that needs the use of technology for better surveillance,” he began.

According to the parliamentarian, the state has continental dimensions and borders the largest drug producers in the world. “It is a very complex region, where we need large investments in public security,” said the captain. “It is a place where we need a different look, increase the number of personnel, more bases like the Arpão, mobile bases, work with a fore, drones and use technology to defend the border. Our roads are the rivers, so we need to have river coverage,” he added.

José Ricardo followed suit, pointing out that there are a number of illegal activities that need to be controlled. “The disappearance is showing the reality that we have there, this almost complete absence of public power, mainly federal, but also state. This is a region where you have the figure of drug trafficking and a series of other illegal activities,” he pointed out.

“What happens is that today we have the demarcations paralyzed, therefore, reducing the presence of the Funai structure and security. The Federal Police is reduced and less present in the border region”, quoted the PT, who criticized the neglect of the current government and the weakening of organs such as the IBAMA and the Funai .

THE CNN Brazil contacted the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Justice and Public Security and the government of Amazonas to obtain the position of the bodies on the speeches of the deputies, but has not yet received a response.
