Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov published a statement in which he called on cryptocurrency platforms to block the accounts of users from Russia.
Fedorov emphasizedthat it is necessary to block not only the accounts of Russian and Belarusian politicians, but also the accounts of ordinary users. Later Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister published a message in which he thanked the DMarket trading platform for freezing the accounts of Russian users. He stated that the funds from their accounts will be used to support the military of Ukraine. The site itself informed only on the suspension of access to assets:
“All skins, tokens and assets will remain on user accounts, but access to their use is limited. Support for the Russian ruble has been removed from the platform.”
Most participants in the cryptocurrency industry reacted negatively to both Fedorov’s call and DMarket’s actions. Alex Gladstein, director of strategic development at the Human Rights Foundation (HRF), stressed that exchanges trying to block users from Russia are just as wrong as exchanges that block accounts from Cuban or Palestinian residents.
“This is immoral because their totalitarian regimes were not democratically elected. Fortunately, since bitcoin can be used without ID, this will not work to its fullest.” wrote Gladstein.
Recall that earlier the Canadian police sent out a demand to cryptocurrency exchanges to “stop facilitating any transactions” of participants in the protest movement of truckers. Later, however, the requirement was cancelled.
