Desert climate: Brazilian cities record Saharan humidity

Brazilian cities have recorded air humidity levels typical of desert areas around the world . This Tuesday (3), municipalities in at least four states recorded 7% relative humidity . The dry climate is comparable to the average humidity of deserts such as the Sahara, on the African continent, and the Atacama, in Chile.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a red alert for low relative humidity for the states of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, Goiás and Tocantins and the Federal District, this Tuesday (3). During this afternoon, cities recorded rates below 10% :

  • Goiania (GO): 7%
  • Luziâna (GO): 7%
  • Ituiutuba (MG): 7%
  • Three Lagoons (MS): 7%
  • Paranaiba (MS): 7%
  • Barretos (SP): 7%

Winter is the driest period in Brazil, but this year the drought has intensified, started earlier and is expected to last longer, according to Willians Bini, meteorologist director at meteoblue.

“A strong mass of dry air has been preventing the advance of cold fronts and is continuing to do so. These factors have been causing humidity levels to remain low not only due to seasonal climate change, but also due to the intensification of other factors, all of which are related to the changes that are occurring in the climate across the planet,” he says.

In addition to being the capital of Goiás, Campo Grande (MS) also had a dry climate: 10% relative humidity. In desert climates, humidity is, on average, below 10%, according to the meteorologist.

Ten states are on yellow alert for a heat wave in the coming days, according to Inmet. The temperature is expected to remain 5ºC above average for up to three days starting this Tuesday (3).
