DESFA assigns to the Corinth Pipeworks the supply of 163 km of the pipeline ‘Western Macedonia’

Cenergy Holdings announces that it has been assigned to the Corinth Pipeworks, its steel pipe sector, by DESFA, Operator of the Hellenic Natural Gas Transmission System, a contract for the supply of 163 km of the “Western Macedonia” pipeline. This pipeline will be the first high pressure gas pipeline in Greece, certified for the transport of up to 100% hydrogen and one of the first in Europe. It is part of the European Hydrogen Backbone, Europe ‘s required hydrogen infrastructure to meet its climate and energy goals.

In compliance with the ASME B31.12 Option B specification, the cooperation of the two companies provides a technically and economically feasible solution for the safe transport of hydrogen at high pressures through large diameter and high strength steel pipes. Thus, the pipes produced today and installed in the existing gas network can cover tomorrow’s energy mix.

The contract awarded to Corinth Pipeworks by DESFA concerns the development of a gas pipeline that covers Western Macedonia and paves the way for the development of the country’s natural gas network. It consists of coated steel pipes 163 km long (97 km LSAW 30 ” and 66 km ERW 14 “and 10”).

The entire quantity of certified for the transport of hydrogen, pipes, will be manufactured at the factory of Corinth Pipeworks in Thisvi. Deliveries are scheduled to begin by the second half of 2022 and be completed by the first half of 2023.

“We are very happy to work with Corinth Pipeworks, one of the leading manufacturers of steel pipes and hollow beams in our industry, for the construction of the new pipeline in Western Macedonia. DESFA has an active role in the development of the hydrogen market, working intensively for to ensure that our network is 100% ready for the transport and storage of renewable gases, such as hydrogen and biomethane “, said Maria Rita Galli, CEO of DESFA.

“With hydrogen playing an important role in the energy transition, we trust the know-how of Corinth Pipeworks for this flagship project that will pave the way for cleaner energy sources with significant benefits for the environment, local communities and the national economy,” said Ioannis. Chomatas, Director of Development Department of DESFA.

“We are proud to contribute, with our technological pioneer for hydrogen, to the creation of the hydrogen network of DESFA to the energy transition of Greece. We have established a long-term relationship of trust and cooperation with DESFA with the common goal of achieving the necessary level of reliability. “to certify the Greek network for the use of hydrogen. The Western Macedonia pipeline will be ready at the same time with the production and use of hydrogen in our country and the additional hydrogen that will be produced from renewable energy sources, will be channeled to the gas network,” he said.
