An Austrian parliamentary committee, as expected, approved this Tuesday (30) a decree extending the country’s lockdown for another 10 days, raising its total duration to 20 days, a limit established by the government.
Faced with rising daily coronavirus infections, the conservative government imposed the measure early last week, becoming the first country in Western Europe to re-impose a lockdown this fall across the continent.
Approximately 67% of Austria’s population is fully vaccinated against coronavirus, one of the lowest rates in the region. Many Austrians are skeptical of vaccines, a view encouraged by the far-right Freedom Party and third-largest in parliament.
Daily new infections dropped to less than 9,000, down from the peak of 15,000 recorded the week before. The total number of deaths confirmed in Austria by Covid-19 is 12,492 since the start of the pandemic
The main committee of the lower house of the Austrian parliament, which is responsible for vetoing certain important government decisions, approved the extension of the lockdown until 11 December.
Under the restriction, non-essential restaurants, cafes, bars, theatres, museums and shops must keep their doors closed. Restaurants and non-essential stores can sell with delivery.
