The data on industrial production for December – released this Wednesday morning (2) by the IBGE – positively surprised expectations, after a series of negative results in the sector.
However, the sector still faces difficulties on both the supply and demand sides, which could prevent a positive trend in the coming months, warns Marcelo Azevedo, manager of economic analysis at CNI (National Confederation of Industry).
“The sector still faces difficulties on the production side, due to problems in the input chains. At the same time, consumers are cautious, due to pressured inflation and uncertainty regarding jobs, which does not guarantee that this good result will be repeated in the coming months”, he said in an interview with CNN Brazil.
“People still face a difficult scenario in the job market and in relation to prices. If this continues, we will certainly have results that are not as good as December. Our expectation is for the beginning of the year with these locks still, but we expect them to loosen throughout the year, both on the supply side and on the consumer side”, he says.
Industrial production rose 2.9% in December compared to November, when production had remained at 0%, interrupting five consecutive months of decline. With the result, the sector ends 2021 with a rise of 3.9%, the first positive after two years.
The highlights were the automotive vehicle sector – which had a low base of comparison – and the food sector.
In addition to concerns about the future of the sector, the CNI manager also commented on the federal government’s intention to reduce the IPI (Taxes over industrialized products). According to him, the measure could help to reduce production costs.
“The tax system as a whole needs to be reviewed, now, the specific discussion of this tax, which has more of a regulatory character, is something to think about in order to reduce some costs. It is a way of trying to minimize the costs that the industry has been facing,” he says.
