Despite Turkish resistance, Finland and Sweden must join NATO, says professor

The decision by Sweden and Finland to formalize their intention to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is logical, when one takes into account that the Russian invasion of Ukraine “changed the strategic calculus” of the countries, according to professor from the Institute of International Relations at USP, Kai Enno Lehmann.

“Finland, for example, has a border of more than 1000 km with Russia and feels threatened, the logical way out is to join a military organization whose basic principle is the mutual defense of its member states”, he explained, in an interview. The CNN Radio .

Turkey has signaled that it will oppose Finland and Sweden joining the bloc. Kai Enno said current states needed unanimity to allow new members, but said he believed the Turks should not be a hindrance.

In theory, Turkey could block entry, but (Turkish President) Erdogan is under domestic pressure due to disastrous economic policy, with high inflation, and growing poverty, for him this stance serves to divert the focus from domestic problems.

At the same time, a second point is the role of the United States: “It seems likely to me that the US will exert a lot of pressure on Turkey, sell itself as the necessary protection against Russian aggression and close countries that seek protection, Finland and Sweden will enter in NATO, it may take time, but Turkey must give in.”

For the professor, Russian President Vladimir Putin “rescued NATO”, as the bloc now has a clear objective for the first time since the Cold War: to protect member states against Russian aggression.
