Details of attempts to dismiss Sam Altman appeared

The WSJ publication published an excerpt from the book “Optimist: Sam Altman, Openai and the race for the invention of the future.” It reveals details about an attempt to dismiss the businessman from the post of Director General of Openai in 2023.

The key moments were conflicts within the council and suspicion of opaque management. An additional factor was the growing concern about the influence of Altman on the strategic decisions of the company.

The main voltage point was the Opena Startup Fund control, which, as it turned out, was in the personal property of Altman, despite the statements that it is controlled by the company. In parallel, the then technical director of the company Murati and co -founder Ilya Sutskevers collected evidence that Altman provided the leadership and employees with incorrect information.

In particular, he argued that the GPT-4 Turbo does not require additional security approval, although Openai lawyers refuted this.

After the transfer of these data to independent members of the board of directors, it was decided to immediately dismiss Altman and his ally, Openai President Greg Brockman. The Council intended to minimize the risks for the company, but their actions led to the opposite effect. Already during the first day, employees began a mass protest, demanding the restoration of Altman.

Among those who signed the letter to his support, there were even Murati and Sutkevers, who had previously initiated the investigation. This put the advice in a difficult situation: without the support of employees and key partners, including Microsoft, their decision turned out to be non -viable.

A few days later, under the pressure of the public and employees, the Council agreed to return Altman to the post of general director. However, the consequences of the conflict led to the departure of several of its participants, including Sutkeever and Murati, who later founded their own projects.
