In the last twenty-four hours, 170,844 cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Italy and 259 people have lost their lives. The death toll is the highest in nine months, and in terms of infections, it is an absolute negative record since the beginning of the pandemic. This deterioration is probably due to the increase of interpersonal contacts due to the holidays.
In total, 1,228,410 diagnostic tests were performed, 13.9% of which were positive. The country’s intensive care units treat 1,392 patients with Covid-19, while 12,912 patients are hospitalized.
Meanwhile, the Draghi government is in favor of the normal return of students to school. The reopening of schools is set depending on the regions, for Friday the 7th of the month, or next Monday 10 January. According to the Italian press, a limit of positive cases will be set, beyond which the students of each class will be quarantined, without distinction between vaccinated and unvaccinated children and adolescents.
The third dose of the vaccine against the virus has been given so far to 20,410,468 citizens, 65% of those who are called to make the booster dose. At present, only 10% of children aged 5 to 10 have been vaccinated.
