“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the unexpected death of Samantha Woll, our board president,” the establishment said in a social media post. “May her memory be a blessing.”

Officers received a call this morning about a person lying on the ground unresponsive, and when they arrived at the scene, they found a “trail of blood” leading them to Woll’s home, according to a statement from the Detroit Police Department. They believe the crime occurred inside her home.

Authorities found Woll’s body with multiple stab wounds and she was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The motive for the killing is not yet known, the police department said.

The city mayor, Mike Duggan said Woll’s death “left a huge hole in the Detroit community.”

In a statement, Duggan said he and Woll were celebrating together at the newly renovated synagogue just a few weeks ago.

“It was a project that she led with great pride and enthusiasm,” Duggan said. “This entire city joins his family and friends in mourning his tragic death.”

The Michigan Attorney General, Dana Nessel , also shared his condolences in a statement on Facebook, saying: “Sam was the kindest person I have ever met. She was motivated by her sincere love for her community, state and country.”

Woll had already worked with the congresswoman Elissa Slotkin , according to a social media post from Slotkin. She said Woll “dedicated her short life to building understanding between religions, bringing light in the face of darkness.”

The Democrat said Woll worked for her helping to set up the office and leading it during her first term.

“My heart aches that we lost someone so dedicated to serving others in such a senseless act. I will miss her tireless desire to serve and her bright smile throughout the Detroit area,” the congresswoman said.
