Deutsche Welle: New arrivals in Lampedusa

As the weather improves, arrivals on the Italian island of Lampedusa increase. The Mediterranean refugee route is being revived.

Weather conditions improve and migrants disembark again in southern Italy. Within the last 48 hours, 120 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa arrived in Lampedusa. At the same time, the Ocean Viking ship of the SOS Mediterranee organization managed to rescue 158 people, who had started their voyage off the coast of Libya. Two dead men were also found on the boat they were on.

Italian financial police rescued 128 migrants and refugees aboard four boats – including pregnant women.

According to data from the Evangelical Churches of Italy, in 2021, 32,841 immigrants and refugees arrived in Lampedusa. The island is located off the coast of Libya and Tunisia and is a major reference point for the “desperate at sea” trying to reach Italy. In the first two months of 2022 alone, 16,626 people landed in Lampedusa from Libya.

Torture in Libyan detention centers

According to the Italian press, there are dozens of testimonies of survivors, which confirm that the abuse and torture in Libyan detention centers continue. Often the only way to get out of this hell and get to Europe is to pay your jailers, writes the newspaper Giornale di Sicilia.

At the same time, the increase of arrivals from Tunisia continues, due to the economic and political crisis of the country, but also the consequences of the coronavirus epidemic. According to most Italian commentators, however, in a phase of almost unlimited solidarity with the Ukrainian refugees, the xenophobic approaches of the Lega and the far-right Italian Brothers do not convince the citizens. And Matteo Salvini’s statements about “real refugees from the North, and fake ones from the Mediterranean South” did him no good.
