Devotees of the ‘Blue Homeland’ against Erdogan for the drilling rig – ‘It traps us in Antalya’

Fifty-five kilometers south of the Turkish coast in the eastern Mediterranean, the drilling vessel “Abdul Hamid Khan” began its work.

The drilling rig is located in the Yorukler-1 field, outside the Cypriot EEZ, and will remain in the area until October 7, when a new NAVTEX is expected to be issued.

Tayyip ErdoÄŸan, speaking yesterday at the ceremony for the departure of the drilling rig, said that the area in which the ship will operate is within the territory of Turkey and that “we do not need anyone’s permission to drill there”.

However, according to SKAI, after the ErdoÄŸan fiesta, the fans of the “Blue Homeland” commented negatively on the Turkish president’s decision to search off the coast of Antalya.

“What we feared has come true! The first duty station of the drilling rig Abdul Hamid Khan is the Yörükler-1 plot, 55 kilometers off GazipaÅŸa. In other words, within the map of Seville, which traps us in the Gulf of Antalya… We don’t know what to say…” the think tank “Turkish Center for Maritime and Global Strategy” commented characteristically on Twitter.

The so-called “Map of Seville” was created when the EU asked the University of Seville to map the EEZs of European states based on the 1982 Law of the Sea.

It was drawn up in the early 2000s and it records the connection of the Greek and Cypriot EEZs. That is, the maximum limits for Greece and Cyprus are defined, using the coast of each inhabited Greek island – regardless of its size and its proximity to the Turkish coast.
