“Devotion to Democracy” unites American countries, says US Defense Secretary at event in Brasilia

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III said that democracy is a hallmark of the Americas and that the deeper we deepen our democracy, the deeper our security.

“Our countries are linked not only by geography, but also by our common interests and values. Our deep respect for human rights and human dignity. Our commitment to the democratic rule of law and our devotion to democracy. The deeper we deepen our democracies, the deeper we deepen our security,” said the Secretary.

The representative spoke this Tuesday (26) at the opening of the XV Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas, in Brasília. The conference was chaired by the Minister of Defense of Brazil, Army General Paulo Sérgio Nogueira de Oliveira.

At the end of the conference, the countries will approve the Brasilia Charter, a document with guidelines for cooperation in defense and security on topics such as peace operations and humanitarian aid, migratory flows, preservation of the environment and climate resilience, landmines, cybersecurity. , mitigation of the impact of pandemics, combating transnational organized crime, capacity building and cooperation with civil society.

Brazilians mention OAS Charter

In a ceremonial speech at the opening of the event, the Minister recalled the commitments of the Conference. “I reaffirm respect for the Charter of the Organization of American States and the American Democratic Charter and their values, principles and mechanisms. I also emphasize compliance with the Williamsburg Principles agreed in the I CMDA, as the main body of the defense sector in the Western Hemisphere. Our goal is to exchange ideas and experience in the field of defense and security. “

The delegate of Brazil at the Conference, Lt. Brig. Air Luiz Roberto do Carmo Lourenço. He reinforced the importance of hemispheric collaboration, regional dialogues and civic-military cooperation. He stated that it is necessary to consolidate and preserve democratic processes in the region, a requirement for security, stability and solidarity in the hemisphere. He also highlighted the need to defend national sovereignty by respecting constitutional precepts and international conventions.
