DF Civil Police arrest suspect of placing explosive device at Brasilia airport

The Civil Police of the Federal District arrested, last Saturday night (24), a suspect of having placed an explosive device at Brasília International Airport.

The suspect is a 54-year-old man, coming from Pará, and who was in Brasília for anti-democratic demonstrations by supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro, according to information from the Civil Police. His identity has not been revealed.

In a rented apartment in Brasília, supposedly linked to the suspect, five more explosives were found, in addition to ammunition, said the delegate general of the Civil Police of the Federal District, Robson Candido.

According to him, more people were involved in the action, not yet identified, and that their objective would be to draw attention to the anti-democratic movement.

“We will arrest anyone who violates the democratic rule of law, with threats and, especially now, with bombs. This is something that has never existed in Brasilia and we are not going to allow any kind of demonstration that could harm people,” Candido told reporters on Saturday night.

On social media, the future Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, thanked the Civil Police for the arrest.

“I congratulate the Civil Police of the DF for the arrest and apprehensions carried out this night, with an apparent connection with the explosive device this morning”, wrote Dino.

He also stated that the future General Director of the Federal Police (PF), Andrei Rodrigues, is monitoring the investigations on behalf of the government’s transition team.

The case joins recent events of post-election violence in the federal capital. About two weeks ago, supporters of the current president tried to invade the headquarters of the PF in Brasília, after the arrest by the body of an indigenous leader linked to the group.

There was a confrontation with the security forces and part of the protesters, armed with homemade bombs, set fire to vehicles. The measure took place on the same day that president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was certified by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).

The suspect arrested on Saturday will be charged with carrying and possessing weapons, ammunition and explosives, as well as an attack against the democratic rule of law, according to the general delegate.

Part of the materials would have been brought by the suspect from Pará, some with an emulsion of sandblasters, he said. Miners use explosives in their quarry excavations.
