The governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha, stated that the capital's health networks, both public and private, had collapsed in terms of care amid the explosion of dengue cases. Since January 25th, the DF has been in a state of public health emergency due to the disease, as have other states in the country.
The statement was made this Thursday (22) at a lunch with businesspeople, in Brasília. The governor's office confirmed the speech to the report from Empresa Brasil de Comunicação.
“Both public and private hospitals in the DF have already collapsed. We are living through a very big crisis. With a focus on reducing these impacts, we published yesterday (21) a decree expanding service in basic health units and hydration tents. The moment is serious, but we have not yet reached the peak of the epidemic. What we want now is to welcome the population in the best possible way”, declared Ibaneis.
Dengue cases in the DF in 2024 – registered until February 17 – increased by 1,351.4% compared to the same period last year. There were 84,151 suspected occurrences of the disease, of which 81,408 were classified as probable cases by the Department of Health itself. In 2023, there were 5,484 probable cases of the disease.
The federal capital has recorded 38 deaths from dengue, the highest number in the country, and there are another 72 cases under investigation. As Governor Ibaneis stated, the situation could even get worse since, historically, the peak of cases of the disease occurs in the months of March, April and May.
On Wednesday (21), the DF government announced the hiring of 741 health professionals to reinforce care for the population, including 200 temporary doctors and for the permanent staff: 180 nursing technicians, 156 nurses, 115 community health agents and 90 specialist doctors. The Department of Health also published a call for the installation of 11 more hydration and care tents for dengue patients, which will be added to the nine already in operation.
According to the latest report from the Ministry of Health, 151 people died in Brazil this year from dengue fever. Another 501 deaths are under investigation. The country has 740,942 probable cases of the disease, with an incidence of 364.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
