The Civil Police of the Federal District arrested two men, one aged 32 and the other aged 56, for the accident involving a clandestine bus that left at least five people dead on Saturday night (21). The detainees are the bus driver and the owner of the vehicle, who were accused of qualified homicide and bodily harm.
According to a note from the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT), “during inspection at the PRF post, in addition to noting the lack of authorization for transport, it was identified that the vehicle was without insurance and had bald tires”. While escorting the bus to the bus station, where it would be apprehended, the driver tried to escape the agents, causing the accident.
In the registered incident, the police say that the owner of the bus, who was in another vehicle and was the driver’s father, informed the inspectors that the bus was not going to the bus station but rather to the Federal Police. The bus driver took off with the vehicle and lost steering, causing the accident.
In a statement, ANTT stated that, “at no time was there any persecution by the Agency’s team”.
According to the agency, “during inspection at the PRF station, in addition to noting the lack of authorization for transport, it was identified that the vehicle was uninsured and had bald tires.”
ANTT explained that it is standard to send the vehicle to the nearest bus terminal so that passengers can board another company with the costs covered by the originating company that had an irregularity identified.
Four people died at the scene of the accident, a fifth person was transferred to the Taguatinga Regional Hospital, but did not survive. According to the Civil Police, at least 18 people were injured.
