Di Maio: He asked for a cross-party letter to Brussels to support Draghi and a cap on energy

Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio today presented his new movement, “Impegno Civico” (Citizens’ Effort) which, according to so far, is to ally with the center-left Democratic Party.

Di Maio left the Five Star Movement a month ago and according to many analysts this move caused the “political domino” that led to the fall of Mario Draghi’s government. He, however, believes that “the government crisis was caused by the extremists”.

“All Italian parties must send a letter to Brussels to support Mario Draghi and the proposal for an energy cap,” Di Maio said today. At the same time, he emphasized that “the front of the reformers should be united, because a victory of the right and the extreme right would mean for Italy isolation from Europe”.

According to the head of Italian diplomacy, “there will be major attempts to interfere in Italian political developments by foreign countries and for this reason, in the next Parliament and Senate, an inquiry committee should be created to investigate the whole matter”.

According to the gallop polls, Di Maio’s new movement at this stage does not exceed 2.3% of the voting intention.
