The Italian government continues to work to increase gas supplies, with the aim of gaining independence from the energy relationship with Russia.
“Tomorrow morning I will travel to Algeria with Prime Minister Mario Draghi to sign a gas deal that will allow us to deal with possible Russian gas blackmail,” said Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio.
“Unfortunately, as a country we were late, we had to diversify our supplies much earlier, but we have many partners and friends around the world,” he added.
“In the last 45 days, I have visited Algeria, Qatar, Angola, Congo, Mozambique, and Azerbaijan. All these countries have said they are willing to increase supplies to Italy,” Di Maio concluded. Mario Draghi is expected to travel to the Congo, Mozambique and Angola soon to sign new energy agreements.
