Diapers are higher than national inflation in two capitals, says IBGE

Those who have a small child have already noticed that the inflation observed in pharmacies is not restricted to medicines.

In the last 12 months, disposable diapers are up 9.57%, according to data from the Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA), the official indicator of price changes, monitored by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Among the 10 metropolitan regions analyzed, the greatest variation was identified in Belo Horizonte. In the region of the capital of Minas Gerais, in the last 12 months, the increase is 14.66%. The local index is above the national inflation of the period, of 11.89%.

According to André Braz, coordinator of the Price Indexes at Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), the phenomenon has different explanations.

“It has to do with production costs, as inflation is spread throughout the economy. The change may be a set of factors such as commodities, on account of cotton and plastic resins derived from petroleum. Transport costs and the corrected wage bill can also be taken into account”, says the economist.

São Paulo is the city with the second highest variation: 11.95%, an index also higher than the national inflation rate. However, although they present similar levels, the capitals of Minas Gerais and São Paulo have different behaviors throughout 2022.

In the first six months of the year, the increase in diapers was 6.8% in Belo Horizonte. In São Paulo, the increase was even greater: 8.37%. In both cases, the numbers are higher than the accumulated official IPCA for the period, of 5.49%.

Variations:

Brazil (4.93% in the year, up to June, and 9.57% in the last 12 months), Belém (4.44% and 7%), Fortaleza (0.28% and 2.21%), Recife (1.53% and 8.39%), Salvador (1.09% and 9.33%), Belo Horizonte (6.8% and 14.66%), Vitória (3.87% and 5.6% ), Rio de Janeiro (3.05% and 4.78%), São Paulo (8.37% and 11.95%), Curitiba (2.5% and 7.18%) and Porto Alegre (2.13 % and 6.18%).
