With the exchange rate and reference prices for gasoline and diesel oil in the international market stabilized at a high level, the lags in relation to the prices practiced in the domestic market by Petrobras remain high, with diesel registering an average difference of 21% and the of 17%, informs the Brazilian Association of Fuel Importers (Abicom).
In some ports that guide the prices of the state-owned company, the lag for diesel reached 25% (Itaqui, Suape, Santos and Araucária) and for gasoline 19% (Araucária) on Thursday (5).
In the port of Aratu, in Bahia, the state where the Mataripe Refinery is located, controlled by Acelen, an arm of the Arab investment fund Mubadala, the lag for diesel was 5% and for gasoline 10%, due to weekly readjustments.
Petrobras has not readjusted the two fuels for 57 days.
According to an exclusive interview with the president of Petrobras, José Mauro Coelho, to Broadcast (Grupo Estado’s real-time news system), at the beginning of the week, “at the right time” the readjustment will be made.
According to Abicom, to match prices with the international market, the state-owned company would have to raise the price of a liter of diesel by R$ 1.27 and of gasoline by R$ 0.78.
On Thursday, however, the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, sent explicit messages to Coelho, as he did with his predecessors days before the fuel increases.
The president even anticipated Petrobras’ profit in the first quarter of 2022, which had not yet been disclosed, and classified the company’s high earnings as a “rape”.
He even threatened Brazil with bankruptcy, in an eventual increase by the company, mainly in diesel, which affects truck drivers, supporters of the president in the 2018 elections.
Minutes later, the state-owned company announced that it had profited R$ 44.5 billion in the first quarter of the year.
The increase was mainly due to the high price of oil in the international market and the increase in the profit margin in diesel.
