During the final plenary of COP29, this Saturday (23), the Minister of Environment and Climate Change (MMA), Marina Silva, spoke on behalf of Brazil, the host country of the next UN climate summit.
In her statement, Marina highlighted Brazil’s commitment to complying with the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), guidelines that determine the transformation of the country’s development model.
“By COP30, our objective is to have NDCs to achieve the 1.5 °C mission”, he declared. “We can only get there with the effort and collaboration of each of us represented here.”
The minister refers to the objective of limiting the Earth’s warming to 1.5 °C, with the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
In Baku, the Brazilian commission presented its NDC’s, whose objective is to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions in the country by 59% to 67% by 2035.
Brazil was the second country to announce its new target, anticipated by the federal government on Friday (8), behind only the United Arab Emirates.
“After the difficult experience we are having here in Baku, we need to reach some result, some outcome that is minimally acceptable and aligned with the emergency we are facing,” he said.
Marina referred to the difficulties faced since the beginning of COP29, in reaching a climate financing agreement.
The initial proposal of US$ 1 trillion, as a contribution for poorer countries to face climate change and also adapt to it, was rejected by the richest and consequently more polluting nations.
“Societies require, first of all, a realignment with a sense of urgency and responsibility, given the scenario in which we live”, he emphasized.
The minister reinforced Brazil’s alignment with the Paris Agreement and with the COP28 negotiations, in the United Arab Emirates.
Highlighting Brazil’s history with environmental preservation, Marina called COP30, in Belém do Pará, the COP of COPs.
“May COP30 be an invitation to trust and understand that solidarity, a sense of cooperation and trust are the raw materials for the success of any climate summit, especially this one which will be the COP of COPs”, he expressed.
“May we get there with NDCs aligned with the 1.5 °C mission”, concluded the minister.
