Digital cameras sold 41.6% less in 2020 than in 2019

CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association in Japan), uniting leading manufacturers of photographic equipment, has published information on sales of cameras and lenses for them in 2020.

During the year, 8,888,292 digital cameras were sold – 41.6% less than in 2019. In monetary terms, the market shrank by 29.4%.

3,578,643 cameras with fixed lenses were sold – 47.0% less than in 2019. In monetary terms, this segment decreased by 41.3%.

5,307,649 interchangeable lens cameras were sold in a year, which is 37.3% less than in 2019. In monetary terms, this segment decreased by 24.8%. Let’s clarify that 2,374,569 SLR cameras were sold, which is 47.3% less than in 2019. In monetary terms, sales of DSLRs brought manufacturers 44.6% less revenue than in 2019. Mirrorless cameras were sold in a year 2,933,080 units. This is 25.9% less than in 2019, but in monetary terms, this segment decreased by only 12.5%.

Interchangeable lens sales declined 36.6% year over year. A total of 9,024,460 lenses were sold. In monetary terms, sales decreased by 31.0%.
