The digital yuan, China’s government cryptocurrency, has been added as a way to pay for fares and top up travel passes at Beijing Metro terminals.
In June, the Beijing and Suzhou metro began accepting payments in digital yuan as part of a pilot project to test the capabilities of the government’s cryptocurrency. As part of testing, payment in digital yuan was made available through a special mobile app for paying for subway tickets called Yitongxing. Now the payment options have been expanded and with the digital yuan, you can buy tickets not only in the application, but also at the ticket offices and terminals of the Beijing subway, as well as top up the balance of travel tickets.
According to a video released by local business media this week, ticketing terminals at a subway station in Beijing now offer digital yuan (e-CNY) payment options alongside cash, WeChat Pay and AliPay. When choosing to pay in digital yuan, users need to launch their digital wallet to scan the QR codes displayed on the terminal screen.
To replenish the balance of the transport card, passengers need to go through a similar process by choosing the digital yuan payment option and scanning the payment QR codes through the digital yuan wallet. As a reminder, China plans to test the digital yuan at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
