Chairman of the National Payment Corporation of the National Bank of Kazakhstan Binur Zhalenov conducted the first transaction using digital tenge as part of the pilot program.

“The card with which I paid is the world’s first debit payment card linked to the digital currency account of the Central Bank,” Zhalenov said.

He added that “the digital tenge is being implemented in the country in stages.”

“Today we will launch the digital tenge into retail circulation, and next year we are counting on large-scale development of the platform together with our partners, financial market participants. More and more innovative services will appear,” said Zhalenov.

As part of the project, the Kazakh authorities are actively interacting with the Visa and Mastercard payment systems. According to Zhalenov, this allows you to pay with digital tenge from anywhere in the world using Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and other devices.

In August, the Supreme Audit Chamber of Kazakhstan held a presentation of the digital tenge and talked about the advantages of the third form of the national currency. Zhalenov then said that the digital tenge should not replace cash or non-cash money, but will be used in parallel.

In September, the National Bank of Kazakhstan announced the creation of a separate interbank structure within the Central Bank, which will lead the development and implementation of the digital tenge.
