Dilma wants Banco dos Brics, say allies

Former president Dilma Rousseff indicated to members of the federal government that she is interested in taking over the Novo Banco de Desenvolvimento (NDB), a financial institution of the Brics — a group of countries formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

According to reports made to CNN the petista has discussed the subject with close allies, including specialists in the Asian country, and has consumed content related to the history and economic development of China, a topic in which she has always shown interest.

The bank’s head office is in Shanghai. The PT’s allies recall that the financial institution was created in 2015, during her government, and that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has already sounded out Dilma about the possibility of her occupying a position in an international body.

Dilma is expected to accompany Lula on his trip to Beijing, scheduled for March. The strategy would be to transform the former president’s presence into one more element of pressure for a change in command of the Banco dos Brics.

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, has already spoken with former diplomat Marcos Troyjo, who currently occupies the presidency of the bank. According to reports made to CNN, Troyjo could leave the post and occupy a role in the management of Tarcísio Freiras, in São Paulo.

One of the criticisms leveled at the current head of the NDB is that he was practically not at the bank’s headquarters last year and was unable to reverse the institution’s disbursement flow.

Among the five Brics countries, Brazil has been one of the smallest recipients of resources and Haddad believes that it can play a more relevant role in financing Brazilian infrastructure.

Troyjo took charge of the institution in May 2020 and has a mandate until 2025. Former special secretary of Foreign Trade at the Ministry of Economy, under the command of Paulo Guedes, he has been labeled a Bolsonarist by the Lula government. press before assuming a position in the Bolsonaro government, as a former commentator for Rádio Jovem Pan and a former columnist for the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, were rescued in recent weeks by people close to Lula as a way of remembering that he had a strong speech antipetista.
