Dimitris Melissanidis acquired the Shelman factory for 23 million euros

By George Lampiris

The acquisition of the former property that housed in the past the headquarters of the Shelman timber industry was carried out by the shipowner, Dimitris Melissanidis, as confirmed by knowledgeable sources in Capital.gr. The amount paid by D. Melissanidis at the auction amounted to 23 million euros.

It is noted that the bankrupt Shelman, founded in 1962 by Panagiotis Iliadis, was acquired in 2009 by the Thessalian Alfa Wood at a cost of 11 million euros, a fact that made it a dominant force in the domestic market of wood and timber products. However, Alfa Wood also ran into serious problems, with the result that a significant part of its real estate is still under auction.

We remind you that Shelman had gone bankrupt since 2014, being in the past one of the largest manufacturers of artificial wood panels in the wider Balkans with production facilities in Larissa, Grevena and Varna, Bulgaria with a subsidiary maintained there.

The property of Vasilikos has a total area of about 400 acres with building facilities of 120,000 sq.m. In the past, the estimated value for the factory was 60 million euros, however, the amount of this amount did not leave room for expression of interest as it was considered by those concerned to be particularly high.

It has access to a port

A decisive point in the selection of Dimitris Melissanidis for the acquisition of the property, is considered the fact that the factory has direct access to a port.

It should be noted that Shelman, which was also listed on the Athens Stock Exchange, decided at the beginning of 2013 to close down the Basilica of Chalkida, at the same time planning the transfer of production lines to the factory it maintained in Komotini in order to service high debt and cost rationalization.

Following the shutdown, the employees and fired former employees of Shelman in the Vasilikos unit took legal action, claiming compensation. Employees’ lawyer, Asimina Papanastasiou, says that at the moment employees have the right to be satisfied with their debts, but the amount of compensation they will receive will depend on whether the law will apply before or after 2012. The transfer of the facilities is expected to be completed after August. We remind you briefly that after 2012 the law stipulates that not only IKA and the State but also the banks are satisfied with a privilege, a fact that changes the percentage of compensation received by each employee. However, this is something that will be seen when the transfer of the property is completed.
