The Ministers of Justice, Flávio Dino, and Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, met for the first time to draw up a joint security plan for Brazilian ports and airports.
The meeting took place this Monday (25) at the Palace of Justice and was attended by the director general of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues, and the National Secretary of Public Security, Tadeu Alencar.
The idea is to launch an interministerial program with actions initially aimed at São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasília.
The plan is to invest in cameras, biometrics, baggage monitoring, new x-ray equipment, body scanners and liquid and explosive detectors.
“Today we started a dialogue with Dino so that, collectively, with the PF and other agents we could start a national security plan”, said Silvio Costa Filho, recently appointed Minister of Ports and Airports.
Combating drug trafficking will be one of the priorities. Guarulhos airport (SP), for example, is the champion in flagging travelers with narcotics. In April, the PF arrested six outsourced employees from the unit suspected of changing luggage tags to ship drugs.
In relation to ports, the focus will be on the coast of São Paulo. In just the first four months of this year, the PF seized 4.2 tons of cocaine at the Port of Santos.
According to the PF, the main destination for drugs leaving Brazil is Europe. The drugs enter through Germany, France, Spain and Belgium and are then distributed to other countries on the continent.
“We have been seeing the drama of violence in cities for a few decades. This is directly related to what happens in ports and airports. There was no planning in the past and now we are fixing it. Let’s focus on this action to take money from the gangs”, pointed out Flávio Dino.
