Dino says he will “further increase federal teams” after wave of attacks in Rio

The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, announced, this Monday (23), that he will further increase the number of federal teams in Rio de Janeiro, following the attacks that set fire to at least 35 buses and a train in the area. west of the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

“We are maintaining and expanding daily operations in Rio, within federal jurisdiction, carrying out arrests, investigations, patrols and seizures. We will further increase the federal teams, in support of the State and the Municipality. In a federative system, we have to respect the other entities of the Federation and seek convergent actions, as much as possible”, said Dino.

“This is how we acted in other states that went through security crises in 2023. We will have new decisions in the coming days, under the guidance of President Lula”, he continued.

Dino also announced that the executive secretary of the ministry, Ricardo Cappelli, the national secretary of Public Security, Tadeu Alencar, and the commander of the National Force, Colonel Alencar, will meet in Rio with the superintendencies of the Federal Police and the Federal Highway Police.

According to the Civil Police, the attacks were carried out by a group of militiamen in retaliation for the death of Matheus da Silva Resende, aged 24, deputy leader of the gang. He died hours earlier during a confrontation with civil police in a favela in Santa Cruz, a neighborhood in the west zone.

Known as Teteu or Faustão, Resende was the nephew of Luis Antônio da Silva Braga, known as Zinho, who since 2021 has been the leader of the main militia group operating in Rio. Faustão, was second in the group’s hierarchy, according to the police.

The attacks occur at a time when the National Public Security Force, the Federal Police and the Federal Highway Police were deployed to Rio de Janeiro to assist local forces amid an increase in crime.

According to state government sources, the possibility of using the Armed Forces to combat crime in Rio has also been discussed with the federal government.

The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro (PL), stated that 12 people were arrested for “terrorist actions” after the fires and said that they will be sent to federal prisons.
