Diocese of Pope Leo XIV in Peru celebrates election of the pontiff

The new Pope Leo XIV, elected on Thursday (8), was honored by the diocese of Chiclayo, Peru, in which the now Pontiff worked for about ten years.

Robert Prevost, as he was known so far, acted for a decade in Trujillo, Peru, and served as Bishop of Chiclayo from 2014 to 2023.

“The Holy People of God, who walks in Chiclayo, welcomes and congratulates the Pope elected: his holiness, Robert Francis Prevost,” wrote the diocese in a Facebook post, signed by the city’s bishop Edgardo Farfán Cordova.

Who is Robert Prevost

Robert Prevost, 69, lived as a missionary in Peru from 2014 to 2023, where he was appointed Bishop of Chiclayo. The Pope has been Peruvian citizenship since 2015.

Before becoming Papa, Predost said in an interview with Vatican News that he still considers himself a missionary. “My vocation, like every Christian, is being a missionary, proclaiming the gospel wherever it is.”

After the experience as a missionary in South America, Prevost led a Vatican office for episcopal appointments.
