Diplomatic marathon in Syria after the attack of jihadists and rebels in Aleppo – Turkey’s attitude is puzzled

The surprise and biggest attack by jihadists and rebel groups in northern Syria in years against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and the seizure of much of Aleppo in just a few days, has caused a flurry of diplomatic activity. The head of Iranian diplomacy, Abbas Araktsi, will travel to Syria on Sunday (1/12), the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced. Araktsi will then travel to Turkey for “consultations on regional issues, particularly recent developments,” the statement added. At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the “dangerous” situation in Syria was discussed in separate talks it had with the respective ministries of Iran and Turkey. Russia and Iran are the main allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, while Turkey is a supporter of rebel factions.
