The director in charge of the Litoral Penitentiary, María Daniela Icaza, died this Thursday (12) in an armed attack while heading to her home in a vehicle, she confirmed to CNN the Ecuadorian Service for Persons Deprived of Liberty (SNAI).
In a statement, the service added that one employee was injured.
The Penitentiary of the Coast, or Center for Male Social Rehabilitation No. 1 in Guayaquil, is considered the most dangerous prison in the country, from where organized crime groups have caused several massacres and riots in recent years.
The National Police indicated that its personnel went to the scene to begin preliminary investigation work.
THE CNN asked the Ministry of the Interior whether the employee had police protection or a security escort and whether it had a risk report on Icaza, and is awaiting a response.
