The climate summit in Glasgow chose the most sustainable buildings in the world. For this, it took into account the solutions applied to buildings that can help the planet fight climate change, the central theme of COP26, which began on the 31st.
Residential or commercial buildings account for nearly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the World Economic Forum. In addition, they are responsible for consuming 50% of all energy used on the planet, and consume 40% of the total raw material taken from nature for human use.
The 17 most sustainable buildings were chosen after a call during COP26, with the presentation of the buildings in an exhibition supported by virtual reality technology.
Among the constructions chosen are the clay houses in Massa Lombarda, Italy, made via 3D printers, entirely from raw clay collected in the region itself. The soil is excavated and shaped to turn houses, which, when they are not used, return to the ground, reducing the production of debris.
In Bali, a private school was built entirely out of bamboo to initially house 90 students. Today, the facilities have grown to house the current 400 students, but keep the original proposal. The school has a 22 meter bamboo bridge, which serves to cross the Ayung River. According to the school’s website, the idea is to build a scenario that is not only beautiful, but also offers a “transition between the realm of idea and reality”, thinking about an education focused on sustainability.
Brazil also has its representative. Ecovila Urbana, in São Paulo, was installed in a community in Jardim Nakamura. Vertical construction generates renewable energy, produces organic food in vertical gardens and has rainwater harvesting systems. The Favela da Paz Institute, responsible for the construction, also installed the first micro solar energy generator inside the favela, which provides hot water for those who could not afford the electric or gas shower.
