The Portraits of Reading survey, which evaluates the behavior of Brazilian readers, released the 15 favorite book authors by the interviewees.
At the top of the list is Machado de Assis followed by other Brazilian authors who dominate the top 10. Only three foreign authors appear on the list.

The number of respondents who contributed to the names on the list, however, was low – less than 30% said they had a favorite writer.
Around 42% of people interviewed said they did not have any favorite author, while 30% did not respond or did not know.
The survey was carried out in person by Instituto Pró-Livro and interviewed more than 5,500 people aged 5 or over, in 208 Brazilian municipalities, between April 30 and July 31, 2024.
Readers are a minority among Brazilians
The research also revealed that the Brazil lost 6.7 million readers in four years. The result is a comparison with the 2019 edition.
The study defines a reader as someone who has read, in whole or in part, at least one book of any genre, printed or digital, in the last three months. According to the publication, the country will have 93.4 million readers in 2024.
For the first time, the proportion of non-readers is greater than that of readers : 53% of respondents did not read even part of a book in the first three months of the year.
