Discover the 7 types of rest your body and mind need

Cast the first stone if you never woke up feeling tired even after a good night’s sleep. It is very common to associate rest only with sleep, but there are other factors that contribute to recharging the energies of the body and mind.

Doctor Saundra Dalton-Smith explains this in more detail in her 2019 TEDx Talk The Reason We’re All Tired and What to Do About It.

In her work, Dr. Saundra explains that there are seven different types of rest that human beings need to feel good and fully recover their energy – and only one of these types is linked to sleep. That is, sleep and rest are not necessarily the same thing.

According to Dr. Saundra explains in her TEDx Talk, “Many go through life thinking that they rested because they slept, but in fact, we are neglecting the other types of necessary rest.” Saundra adds that the result is “a culture of high performance, high productivity, chronic fatigue and individuals suffering from burnout”.

The doctor also warns in her lecture that “many of us are suffering from a deficit of rest because we don’t understand the power of rest. Rest is an alternative therapy available to us free of chemicals and any substance, the safest of all and the least used by all of us”.

Thinking about helping you, the Popverso CNN team watched the full TEDx Talk by Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith and prepared a summary of the seven types of rest necessary for your body and mind.

But attention: fatigue is also a symptom that can be associated with a number of health problems. Therefore, it is important to seek specialized care if it persists – and if you feel the need.

physical rest

It is the best known type and the one most associated with the act of resting. It can be active – practiced in activities that stimulate circulation and flexibility, such as yoga, stretching and massage – or passive – sleep and nap.

mental rest

It can be practiced in short breaks during the working day – preferably every two hours. But they need to be done slowly, to remind you to slow down.

Another way to rest your mind is to keep a notebook by your bed to jot down any thoughts that are keeping you from falling asleep.

sensory rest

Our senses are bombarded with stimuli all the time – screens, lights, noises, lots of conversations, cell phone notifications.

This can cause them to go into overload. Therefore, it is important to practice sensory rest, choosing, for example, to close your eyes for a minute in the middle of your day or even not using electronic devices at the end of each day.

No matter your choice, the important thing is to intentionally spare your senses from stimuli at some point in your routine.

creative rest

This type of rest is highly recommended for those who work solving problems or with a lot of new ideas.

To practice it, allow yourself to live moments outdoors. It could be in a park, hiking or even in your backyard if you have one.

Another option that works is decorating your desktop with images of places you love and artwork that inspires you. Admiring some art is also a way to practice creative rest.

emotional rest

To practice emotional rest, you need to set aside time in your day to freely express your feelings without worrying about judgment or pleasing others. Therapy can be important to help you with this.

social rest

The secret to social rest is to keep only good friends around. It is necessary to identify the relationships that are positive and those that drain us of energy to clean up our social life. Make sure you are surrounded by positive and supportive people.

And, if most of your interactions happen in the virtual environment, you can feel more present in those moments by turning on your camera and completely focusing on what you are talking about at that moment – that is, no sharing your attention with other stimuli.

spiritual rest

It is provided when we feel connected to something greater and a deep sense of belonging, love, purpose and acceptance. It can be practiced in religious rituals, during meditations or doing work in your community.
