The latest book by the writer from Minas Gerais Carolina Maria de Jesus (1914-1977), who would have turned 100 years old this Thursday (14) if she were alive, “The Slave “, was published posthumously in December 2023.
The plot is a story of love and disappointment between two young people from different social classes. In this context, Carolina writes strong sentences like: “We are slaves to everything we desire to possess. No one is free in this world “.
In addition to “O Escravo”, three other works by the author, who died in 1977, were published posthumously: Diário de Bitita (1986), Antologia Pessoal (1996) and Meu Estranho Diário (1996).
The unpublished work was originally written in 1950 and published in 2023 by the publisher Company of Letters .
She introduces the reader to the protagonists Rosa and Renato, who are cousins, and, although in love, they end up following different paths under pressure from the boy's rich family.
“Carolina Maria de Jesus’s literary career was very short. In life, she published few books. The weight of her work falls on the circumstances of her life: woman, poor, living in slums, single mother with three children, paper collector, and managed to be a writer,” she tells CNN The literature teacher Claudia Fernandes .
Despite having only studied until the third year (formerly second grade) of elementary school, Carolina Maria de Jesus became a writer and had her first work, “Eviction Room: diary of a favela resident “, translated into 13 languages.
“Talking about Carolina is talking about the strength of this woman who became a writer”, concludes professor Claudia.
