Discover the long list of lawsuits involving Donald Trump

The volume of investigations involving former US President Donald Trump is staggering and includes efforts to reverse the outcome of the 2020 US presidential election, the handling of confidential White House documents and his companies’ finances.

Trump is being sued by both the legislature and the police, by his niece Mary Trump, by journalist E. Jean Carroll – whose rape charge he denies – and by his former lawyer Michael Cohen, who has already served time in prison. The New York State Attorney General and the Manhattan District Attorney are looking into Trump’s company. And several congressional committees still want to see your tax returns.

Following are some of the investigations and lawsuits involving the former president:

January 6: House selects committee investigation

The panel made up of Democratic and two Republican lawmakers – Representatives Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger – analyzing everything that culminated in and involves the January 6 attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters, an act that interrupted the certification of Joe Biden’s electoral victory .

The committee has issued at least 80 subpoenas requesting testimony or phone records from close Trump aides, including Rudy Giuliani and former chief of staff Mark Meadows, organizers of the “Stop the Steal” rally and former White House staff.

According to the report by CNNTrump’s activities on January 6 and efforts to use government mechanisms to change the outcome of the election are of special interest.

The committee also obtained records related to the January 6 acts of Trump’s White House, after the Supreme Court rejected the former president’s attempt to block the transfer of documents from the National Archives.

Public hearings are scheduled for the coming months and a report is expected to be published later this year. It is also possible for the committee to make formal recommendations to the Department of Justice for criminal prosecution.

January 6: Lawsuits by legislature and police

Several Democratic congressmen accused Trump and Giuliani of conspiring with the far-right groups Proud Boys and Oath Keepers to incite the attacks. On another front, California Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell is suing Trump, Giuliani, Donald Trump Jr. and Republican Representative Mo Brooks, claiming that their speeches on January 6, 2021, incited the riot.

Several members of the US Capitol Police and Washington Metropolitan Police are also suing the former president, claiming that Trump’s words and actions fueled the riot. Several cases accuse Trump of ordering the assault, aiding and abetting the assault and assaults, and violating local Washington laws, which prohibit incitement to riots and disorderly conduct.

So far, Trump and his top advisers have not been formally charged with any crimes. The former president and others who are prosecuted argued that they are not responsible for the actions of the people who stormed the Capitol.

White House Documents: Where Will They Be?

Tasked with collecting and classifying presidential material, the National Archives says at least 15 boxes of White House records were recovered from Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida resort, including records that could be classified.

There are also indications that Trump ripped up documents at the White House, but Maggie Haberman of The New York Times said that some papers may have been flushed down the toilet (Trump denies).

Any unauthorized retention or destruction of White House documents raises a red flag because of criminal law that prohibits the removal or destruction of official government records, as legal experts explained to CNN.

The Justice Department has not decided whether to formally launch an investigation, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Election 2020: Efforts to reverse the results in Georgia

In Fulton County, Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis is investigating what Trump or his allies may have done in their efforts to wrest Biden’s Georgia victory.

The investigation was launched last year after Trump’s call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in which he pressured the Republican to “find” votes to overturn the election results.

“This is a criminal investigation. We’re not here playing a game,” prosecutor Willis told Sara Murray of CNN, in a recent interview. “I plan to use the power of the law. We are all citizens”.

Willis, who wants to convene a grand jury in May, was also targeted by racist threats and asked the FBI for help.

Election 2020: Fake voters in Michigan

The Justice Department (equivalent to the ministry) is reviewing the plan to introduce false voters from seven states following a referral from the Michigan state attorney general.

Fake certificates were created by Trump allies in Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Nevada and New Mexico. The idea was to replace valid voters in their states with a pro-Trump ticket.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said falsifying public and election records could result in nearly 20 years in prison under state law. Although no one has been charged with a crime, Nessel said she referred the Michigan investigation to the US Department of Justice.

A fake Michigan voter recently boasted that the Trump campaign had coordinated the entire operation.

“We fight to position voters. The Trump campaign asked us to do that,” Meshawn Maddock, co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party, told a public event organized by conservative group Stand Up Michigan, according to a recording obtained by CNN.

Trump Organization: Criminal and Civil Investigation in NY

Since 2019, New York Attorney General Letitia James has been investigating Trump companies and recently detailed what her office believes are “misleading or fraudulent” financial statements.

James says his office has discovered “significant” evidence that “indicates that the Trump Organization used fraudulent or misleading asset valuations to obtain various economic benefits, including loans, insurance coverage and tax deductions.”

Trump has denied wrongdoing and has repeatedly said that the James investigation is politically motivated.

Trump Organization: Another Criminal Investigation in NY

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg inherited the Trump business investigation and is moving quickly.

The investigation, which has been ongoing for several years, appears to be coming to a head with prosecutors focusing on the accuracy of the Trump Organization’s financial statements when seeking funding, sources told CNN.

Personal finance: Litigation with niece Mary Trump

Trump and his niece Mary are fighting in court over their part of a 2001 family settlement.

In 2020, Mary Trump sued Trump, his sister Maryanne Trump Barry, a retired judge and executor of the estate of her late uncle Robert Trump, alleging that “they designed and executed a complex scheme to divert funds from their interests, conceal their fraud, and deceive her about the true value of what she had inherited.

Meanwhile, the former president is suing his niece and The New York Times in New York state court for disclosing his tax information.

Defamation: The rape allegations

Journalist and magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll alleged that Trump raped her in a dressing room at a New York department store in the mid-1990s and defamed her when he denied the rape, saying she was not his type and that she would have invented the case to increase sales of his book.

A federal appeals court is considering whether the case can proceed. Trump and the Justice Department said Trump was a federal official and his statements denying Carroll’s allegations were made in response to questions from reporters while he was in the White House. The lawyers argued that the Department of Justice should be the defendant in this lawsuit, but that since the government cannot be sued for defamation (only an individual), this would end the case.

Meanwhile, another federal judge is due to hold a hearing Thursday on Trump’s countersuit against Carroll.

Michael Cohen: Retaliation Against Trump and Barr

Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen is suing the former president, former Attorney General William Barr and others, alleging they put him back in prison while he was under house arrest. They would have done this to prevent Cohen from promoting his new book.

Because of Covid-19, Cohen was serving the remainder of his sentence at home for lying to Congress and for campaign violations, when he started a social media campaign in mid-2020, Courthouse News reported.

In retaliation, Cohen says he was sent back to prison and spent 16 days in solitary confinement before a federal judge pleaded on his behalf.

An initial process conference is scheduled for early March.
