Discover the most anticipated science fiction films of 2024 in cinema

The year 2024 promises to be full of great film productions for science fiction lovers.

Whether with new films or sequels to famous features, movie theaters must have good programming of this genre throughout the year.

For those of you who already want to plan ahead and write down on your calendar when your new favorite film might premiere, the CNN prepared a list of the most anticipated science fictions of 2024. Check it out below:

“Dune — Part 2”

The film “Dune: Part 2” had its release date moved up and will hit theaters sooner after the end of the Hollywood strike, according to Variety.

The sequel to Denis Villeneuve's film is scheduled to hit cinemas around the world on March 1, 2024.

“Dune: Part 2” will be the second chapter of the adaptation made by the director based on the science fiction series written by Frank Herbert, consisting of six volumes.

“Ghostbusters: Ice Apocalypse”

“Ghostbusters: Apocalypse of Ice” will continue the feature film “Beyond”, a direct sequel to the original Ghostbusters films, set three decades after the events of “Ghostbusters II”.

Sony Pictures has revealed the film's official synopsis: 'Ghostbusters: Ice Apocalypse', the Spengler family returns to the place where it all began – the iconic New York fire station – to join the original Ghostbusters, who have developed a research laboratory top secret to take ghost busting to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.”

The film hits theaters on March 28.

“Mickey 17”

“Parasite” director Bong Joon-Ho, winner of best film and best director at the 2019 Oscars, returns to the big screen with “Mickey 17”. The cast includes Robert Pattinson, from “Twilight” and “Batman”; and Toni Collette, from “The Sixth Sense” and “Little Miss Sunshine”.

The film is based on the book “Mickey 7”, by Edward Ashton, and tells the story of Mickey 17, a member of a human expedition sent to colonize a planet. He is an “expendable” employee, who will be cloned when he is killed during the suicide mission.

The film hits theaters on March 28.

“Planet of the Apes: Reign”

Continuing the Planet of the Apes franchise, Wes Ball, from “Maze Runner” directs “Reign of the Planet of the Apes”.

The film shows an era in which apes are the dominant species on the planet and live in harmony while humans hide.

A new leader builds his empire and, at the same time, a young monkey questions the structures and could put the future of both worlds in question.

The film hits theaters on May 23.

“Alien: Romulus”

Another established science fiction franchise that will get a new film is “Alien”. “Alien: Romulus” will take place between the original film in the saga and “Alien: The Rescue” and will be directed by Fede Álvarez.

There are no confirmations about the synopsis of the work, but Cailee Spaeny, from “Mare of Easttown”, and Isabela Merced, from “Dora and the Lost City” will be in the cast.

The film hits theaters on August 16.

“Sonic 3”

The third film in the sequel hits theaters in 2024 and promises something new. The character Shadow appeared in the post-credits scenes of “Sonic 2” and has already been confirmed in the new film through a post on Twitter.

In the image you can see a part of his body next to a clapperboard.

The premiere was confirmed for December 20th.

“Transformers: One”

Another acclaimed franchise will get a sequel. “Transformers” this time will return to the big screen with an animation with Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson in the voice cast.

The film will be directed by Josh Cooley, from “Toy Story 4” and will address the beginning of the rivalry between Optimus Prime and Megatron.

The film hits screens on September 13th.

“Angry”

Mad Max also gains new developments. “Furiosa: the Mad Max Saga” promises to tell a story that took place before “Mad Max: Fury Road”, one of the most successful in the franchise.

Anya Taylor-Joy (who plays Furiosa) and Chris Hemsworth (who plays the villain Dementus) are in the cast. Directed by George Miller.

The film’s premiere is scheduled for May 23rd.

“Godzilla and Kong 2: The New Empire”

The continuation of the confrontation between the two titans Godzilla and King Kong places the duo together against a challenge that threatens their lives and humanity, according to the synopsis.

“Gdozilla and Kong 2: The New Empire” will be directed by Adam Wingard and will feature Dan Stevens from “The Legion” and “Beauty and the Beast” as the protagonist.

The premiere is scheduled for April 12th.
