The long “The Seed of the Sacred Fruit” was one of those nominated for Best International Film at the 2025 Oscars this Thursday (23). With the announcement, the production established itself as one of the Brazilian’s rivals “I’m Still Here” starring Fernanda Torres.
In the film, the audience focuses on Iman’s story (Missagh Zareh ), recently promoted to investigating judge, who faces paranoia and mental exhaustion amid the political unrest in Tehran, caused by the death of a young woman. When his gun disappears, he begins to suspect his wife and daughters, adopting harsh measures that end up fraying family ties.
“The Seed of the Sacred Fruit” is signed by Mohammad Rasoulof an Iranian filmmaker who, due to the content and nature of his films, came into conflict with the Iranian government and was arrested several times.
In May 2024, for example, after the announcement that the work had been selected for the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival, he was sentenced by the Islamic regime to eight years in prison and flogging. With the sentence, he fled to Germany and was able to participate in the event. In Brazil, the film made its debut at the Rio 2024 Festival.
