Born on February 11, 1986, Boric is the son of Luis Javier Boric and María Soledad Font. Check out the details about the politician’s trajectory.
A family of Croatian origin
In the mid-20th century, Ive Boric and Stoza Baresic got married and had six children, born in Ugljan, an island belonging to the then Austro-Hungarian Empire — today Croatia. Sime and Ive Boric Baresic immigrated to Magallanes around 1885 and dedicated themselves to mining for gold in and around the Beagle Channel, according to the newspaper El Mercurio.
Ive’s surname was perpetuated in the Boric River on the island of Lennox, according to El Diario Austral.
Later, Ive — who adopted the name Juan — settled in Punta Arenas. However, he later returned to Ugljan and married Bozica (known as Natalia) Crnosija Vucina in 1893. Ive immediately returned to Chile, followed by his wife and son, Ive Ante, who was born in 1885.
Upon his arrival in the Magallanes region, Ive worked on tasks related to the construction and repair of marine vessels, revealed El Mercurio.
Eleven children were born from the marriage of Ive Boric and Bozica Crnosija: Juan (Ive Ante), Mariano, Ángela, Paulina, Vicente, Vladimiro, Luis Pedro, María, José, Arturo and Benjamin.
Luis Pedro Boric Crnosija married Magdalena Scarpa Martinic, a descendant of Dalmatian immigrants, with whom he had four children, Luis Javier Boric Scarpa being the eldest of them.
Luis Javier is a chemical engineer and worked for 41 years at the National Oil Company (ENAP), retiring in 2012 as a refining and logistics manager, reported El Diario Austral. In 1985, he married María Soledad Font, from whose union Gabriel Boric Font was born in 1986 and, later, his brothers Simón and Tomás Boric Font.
Gabriel Boric attended primary and secondary education between 1991 and 2003 at The British School, one of the most expensive schools in Punta Arenas. He then traveled to Santiago to study law at the University of Chile.
“Gabriel, of course, has been a privileged young man within Magallanes’ local society. Their father, as an administrative engineer at the Companhia Nacional de Petróleo, was able to give them these opportunities for quality of life and also for studying,” Magallanes journalist Rodrigo Utz told CNN Chile.
political career
Gabriel Boric graduated in law in 2004. During his time as a student, he was an assistant in the courses of Institutional History of Chile, Theory of Justice and International Human Rights Law. In addition, he joined the political group Izquierda Autónoma (Autonomous Left).
In 2008, he was elected advisor to the Federation of Students of the University of Chile (FECH). The following year, he was elected president of the Center for Law Students at the University of Chile. Between 2010 and 2011, he was a university senator at the Casa de Estudos.
In 2012, after winning the list of Creamos Izquierda, he assumed the presidency of FECH, succeeding Camila Vallejo. During his tenure, he led the student protest that started in 2011 and was one of the spokespersons for the Confederation of Students of Chile (Confech).
In late 2013, he was elected an independent deputy for the former district 60. About three years later, he left the Autonomous Left and created the Autonomous Movement. At the same time, with the deputy of the Democratic Revolution (RD) Giorgio Jackson, he promoted the creation of the Frente Amplio group as an alternative conglomerate to the New Majority, of former president Michelle Bachelet.
In 2017, he was reelected as deputy for the new district 28, in Magallanes, Patagonia.
During November 2018, he led the act of founding a new alliance that would integrate the Autonomist Movement (MA), Libertarian Left (IL), New Democracy (ND) and Socialism and Freedom (SOL) parties. Finally, in April 2019, Social Convergence was created.
Peace agreement
Since the events that took place in October 2019 social breakout, Boric participated in the signing of the Agreement for Social Peace and the New Constitution, signed on November 15 of the same year by representatives of the main political parties in the country. The instance started the current constitutional process in Chile.
On March 17, 2021, the party’s central committee proclaimed him its candidate for the presidency of the Republic. He was later proclaimed candidate by several parties of the Frente Amplio and registered his candidacy for the primaries of the Apruebo Dignidad alliance, where he defeated the communist Daniel Jadue.
In the first round of the presidential election, on November 21, 2021, Boric obtained 1,814,809 votes, which corresponds to 25.83% of the total valid votes, occupying second place in the preferences, moving to the second round of elections.
Finally, and after an intense day of voting, Gabriel Boric Font won the 2021 presidential election by defeating José Antonio Kast in the second round.
