Discovered a 2,000 -year -old sauna: The Roman Bath that emerged from the “Sea of Happiness”

In recent days, underwater excavations have been completed that brought to light an impressively well -preserved Roman thermal space, three meters below sea level, in the center of Portus Iulius, in Zone B of the Baya submarine Park, also known as the sea of Naples. The research began after the site was identified in 2023 and allowed the complete documentation of a rare structure, which opens new prospects for the study of the archaeological complex that is currently submerged due to the seating of the soil (Bradisismo). The space is identified with a Laconicum, corresponding to a Roman sauna, and stands out for its excellent level of preservation. The floor with the original mosaic remains in place, based on small suspensurae, which created a gap to channel hot air.
