THE Big Thunder Mountain Railroad one of the most popular attractions in the Magic Kingdom Park in Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, will be closed until 2026 for renovations. Operations on the family roller coaster were suspended on Monday (6).
“Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will temporarily close for renovations on January 6, 2025. The attraction will reopen with a touch of magical new features in 2026,” says the official Walt Disney World website, without a specific reopening date.
The roller coaster
Opened in 1980, the roller coaster is located in the Frontierland area, close to the Tiana’s Bayou Adventure attraction, the former Splash Mountain, which was redesigned and opened in June last year.
Inspired by the southwestern United States, Big Thunder’s appearance mimics the region’s rock formations.
Designed for children and adults with a minimum height of 1.02 m, the attraction takes visitors to a haunted gold mine, where adventurers have fun aboard a “runaway” train. Some sections sway and there are also passages in curves, tunnels and in dark places.
Similar roller coaster models are present in other Disney parks around the world, such as Disneyland Park, in California; at Disneyland Park, in Paris; and at Tokyo Disneyland, in Tokyo.
What’s new at Walt Disney World Resort
Renovations at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad are not the only new features at the Orlando resort.
Magic Kingdom Park, which is the most visited theme park in the world, will undergo the biggest expansion in history, with construction starting this year. The project includes the construction of a new villain-themed area, as well as an area inspired by the “Cars” franchise in a part of Frontierland.
A “Pirates of the Caribbean” tavern and a new nighttime parade, Disney Starlight, are also on the horizon, which will begin this summer.
Another roller coaster that will undergo changes will be the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. No date has yet been set, it will no longer have the band Aerosmith as the protagonist and will have the Muppets as the main characters.
Over the next few years, the park will also see the addition of new attractions and shows, including a themed area inspired by “Monsters Inc.” with the complex’s first suspended roller coaster.
In an interview with CNN Viagem & Gastronomia, Josh D’Amaro chairman of Disney Experiences, highlighted the high values allocated to the company’s parks and experiences even in times of crisis.
“I think people have no idea how aggressive we are going to be from an investment point of view,” he said last November in relation to the investment cycle valued at US$60 billion, which also foresees new developments in other parks in and around Orlando. in the world, in addition to increases in the company’s cruise line.
