“The Little Mermaid” (1989)

A few years later, Disney revealed its fourth princess: Ariel, protagonist of “The Little Mermaid.” After the movie’s success, the title still won a TV series in 1992 and two other animated films in 2000 and 2008.

In 2023, Halle Bailey brought the princess to life in a live-action rereading, which tells the story of a young mermaid who dreams of knowing the human world and ends up falling in love with a prince. To fulfill her wish, she gives her voice to a witch in exchange for a couple of legs.

What she doesn’t know is that Ursula is actively working against her in an attempt to overthrow Ariel’s father, King Triton.

“Beauty and the Beast” (1991)

In the early 1990s, Disney introduced Princess Bela to the World, who later appeared in other titles and also a 2017 live-action, with the actress Emma Watson .

In the story, she is introduced as a smart young woman who loves reading and who wants to venture away from her little village. When her father is imprisoned by a beast, owner of an enchanted castle, she offers herself in exchange for her father’s freedom.

“Aladdin” (1992)

“Pocahontas” (1995)

Based on a historical figure, Pocahontas is considered the seventh Disney Princess and so far has not gained a live-action adaptation.

In the movie, she is the only daughter of the Powhatan People’s Chief. Adventurous and free, she feels marrying the man her father desires is not the right way to follow. She creates a strong bond with John Smith, an English man belonging to a group of colonizers who land in American lands, and teaches him about his culture and nature.

“Mulan” (1998)

Disney’s eighth princess was inspired by a legendary Chinese figure and became the first Disney princess from the East Asia. In addition, it was the first not to belong to a royal family or to marry a prince.

In the plot, Mulan disrespects the tradition that says that only men should go to war when their elderly and sick father is summoned. Disguised as a man, the young woman enlists in the army and sets out towards the battle to defend China from the fearsome Shan Yu. In 2020, Disney adapted the story to a live action with Yifei Liu.

“The Princess and the Sapo” (2009)

In the 2000s, Disney made history with the first black princess, Tiana. Situated in New Orleans, the young woman has a dream of opening a restaurant, but on the day she shares a kiss with a prince who had been turned into frog, Tiana ends up being the victim of the same curse.

“Wrapped” (2010)

“Valente” (2012)
