Walt Disney announced on Friday that it will cover travel expenses for employees seeking family planning or reproductive health care, following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that reversed the landmark Roe v. Wade, which protected women’s right to abortion.
The company told employees it recognizes the decision’s impact on abortion, but remains committed to providing comprehensive access to quality health care — including family planning and reproductive care, according to a Disney spokesperson.
The company’s benefits will cover costs for employees who need to travel elsewhere in the country to gain access to care, including for an abortion.
Disney employs about 80,000 people at the Walt Disney World resort in Florida, where Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law banning abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.
The state law, which is due to take effect on July 1, was inspired by the state of Mississippi’s ban on the practice after 15 weeks’ gestation, which is at the heart of the Supreme Court’s decision.
The company’s stance could bring it back into conflict with DeSantis, who stripped Disney of self-governing status for the Disney World complex in apparent retaliation for the company’s opposition to the parental rights education bill, dubbed by its opponents as “don’t say gay” legislation.
