Diver dies after falling ill while diving 40 meters deep

The Civil Police are investigating the accidental death of a 36-year-old professional diver after feeling unwell during a dive in southern Bahia. According to preliminary information, he had been affected by decompression sickness.

Robson Augusto da Silva Costa was immersing himself at a depth of 40 meters, around 60 kilometers off the coast of Porto Seguro, when he suffered discomfort during the procedure.

The case was registered by the Santa Cruz Cabrália Territorial Police Station, in the same region. According to police, the crew of a vessel tried to revive him, but Robson did not resist. The Santa Cruz Cabrália Police Station issued the autopsy guide and continues to investigate the circumstances of what happened.

What is decompression sickness

The disease occurs when gas bubbles, such as nitrogen, form in the blood due to high pressure during deep diving.

During diving, inert gases from the cylinders dissolve in the body’s tissues, and the greater the depth and diving time, the greater the amount of gases absorbed. The rise to the surface needs to be controlled to avoid complications, such as the formation of these bubbles. If left untreated, the disease can be fatal.

The treatment is carried out with the help of a hyperbaric chamber, where the patient breathes pure oxygen to eliminate gases and reverse symptoms.
