Keith Grayson, better known by his stage name DJ Kay Slay, has died at age 55 from complications from Covid-19. The information was confirmed by the artist’s family and music producer Van Silk.
He was hospitalized in December 2021, and acquired severe acute respiratory syndrome after contracting coronavirus. According to the family, he was intubated and passed through the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine.
Grayson rose to prominence when he participated in a documentary about hip hop in 1983 called “Style Wars”. His first passion was graffiti, the universe in which he became famous before starting a musical career. During the 1990s, he entered the New York rap and hip hop DJ scene, where he also thrived.
He was an enthusiast and supporter of popular rap, and made statements against ephemeral fads in the music genre.
“Hip hop has lost a gem. My dear brother is gone. I had known him since I was 16 years old. He was my little brother. I introduced him to a lot of things and we did a lot of things together,” producer Van Silk said, mourning his passing.
American radio station Hot 97, which specializes in rap and hip hop, referred to Grayson as a “cultural icon”. “Our hearts go out to his family, friends and fans around the world, and we will continue to celebrate the Drama King’s legacy forever.”
